Build Retention

The company I work for has a great thing called Hero Values. I believe our Hero Values here build retention. They are: • Trust - We demonstrate integrity in all interactions while earning the trust and respect of others. • Caring - We value open and honest communication, in an environment that unleashes the potential of the people we interact with - students, industry customers, employees and the community. • Innovation - We are committed to continuous improvement and breakthrough achievements by collaborating with each other to create value to our business. • Courage - We take bold, wise risks and empower others to do the same. • Wisdom - We make decisions based on the organization's purpose, the legitimate needs of our people, and the necessity of profit. • Fun - We create a playful place to work that consistently demonstrates an enthusiasm for life, ideas and satisfying work.

Intervention

Intervention is done by asking the correct questions when the students are acting out. When a student acts out in a disruptive behavior sometimes it is a cry for help. Younger generation of students do not know how to handle issues that happen in the world so they find it easier to get attention by disrupting others. By asking the correct questions and willing to listen and give proper information to the student, the student will be in a better condition to continue with their education.

Training and Retention

The biggest problem I see for retention is the training for the Instructors, who interact with the students every day, and do not have the ability to pick up on their students training styles so they can watch for any problems the students will encounter and help them work through and/or point them to the right office to get the help they need. Once the student is getting the help needed we need to monitor too see they are working thru the problem and not letting someone else fix it for them.

Show the value!

Many students don't grasp the value of their learning experience! By giving them examples and role models, their confidence is increased and therefore their desire to stay in school and complete the course is solidified.

One of my jobs here is to help identify troubled students. The student’s attendance rate is a great tool to use. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. The student’s attendance rate is a sign of troubled student’s. When I pull students from class we have time to discuss what his/her issues are so we can find an action plan to aid the student to keep them in class. Everybody has to remember that our students also have day to day issues just like everyone else.

Retention

Retention is hard work we have so many factors that come into play when dealing with retention. Money, employment, first time away from home. older students that have been out of school for a long time, then you have students that don't want to follow the rules and there out come is dismissed from school. But with the right teaching and coaching we can help with most of these hurdles and teach the ones that want to learn.

To retain........

Students that look forward to your class will tell other students.

The Program

Using the tools available to you can help retention. BUT, you have to look in the mirror and make sure that you realize the best tool is yourself. I you are a total bore, no energy, and not positive, the student will see this and begin to become very apathetic.

Intervention

There are a number things that can cause a student where he is ready to drop out of school. The instructor needs to listen to comments made by these students, just in case they say something that can be used to bring a positive result. The problem with things today, we can't ask about certain things due to Federal Privacy issues, which in my mind is somewhat counterprodutive for the student.

Losing students

If I see a pattern of hours missed by a student, I have a talk with that person in order to see, without being too nosey, what is happening with him. If a student scores low on his/her test, I get involved right away, tutoring, what ever it takes to get their scores and especially their confidence level on the rise.

team effort

By working together you can overcome many hurdles !!

Retention

I find myself watching my students for that confused look, which is easy to spot, and I remind them that I can't read their minds... This will usually start the questions coming in.

retention

i strongly beleive that students like to be told the truth about how its going to affect them in school. try help as best as you can.

orientation..... or..... orientations!

I don't think that one is enough. I know it puts more work on the parties involved but there should be an option of when. The school might also come up with an orientation the student could do one line and get credit for, after all the kids now adays live online....and on phone(hahahaha)

accessability won't stop at orientation

I think that one of the most important things an instructor can do is maintain their accessability. I have hade more students come up to me at break and lunch for help than I have during class. This starts the ball rolling, you help one student word gets around quick that your willing to help. I know we cant spend every lunch with the students, but I think more instructors should get out of the lounge and get involved other than in class. But thats just my opinion!!!

Improved retention through outside activites

One of the biggest challenges I face as a student council faculty advisor is getting help with outside events from the faculty. It is rare that someone will volunteer to help with an event, any ideas?

retension

Retension with students begins with a daily plan that can involve students with some sort of activity, rather than lecturing on something that you feel is important.alot of instructors are of the misconception that what they are talking about is interesting.

dynamics of intervention

As part of a post secondary education system, as an Instructor, we are not trained to deal with the problems of student issues. our role simply lies in that of educating the student in the field that we once worked in.Any company employs people that are qualified in those areas that relate to personal issues.

retention

Does anyone else make themselves available to the students after class whenever possible? There are many students that are too afraid/shy to ask questions while other students are there. This helps retention by making the student know that you care enough to take the time just to listen.

Retention

Retention of a student is complicated, but getting them to class in time eventho they are interested in the subject matter is extremely hard. Especially when they have to work to support themselves, study the material and family situations.
