retention

make learning fun and not bore the students they will come back and this will spread like wild fire!

Testing

With respect to stress......What do the rest of you do when dealing with a student that is stressed out only when taking a test?

Retention

I find that if you show some positive interest in the students as well as a strong presentation of the subject matter you will have better retention overall. Students respone well to a caring leader, as long as the instructor knows the professional limits.

Lost dreams

Just being approachable is sometimes not enough. You may have to recognize that the student is having a problem and approach them. It's sad when a student goes back home because you know that at one time they had a goal, a purpose, and a dream and now that's gone. I t must take a while for them to get the feeling out of their head that they failed, or someone failed them, in accomplishing their goal. For the same reason that they will feel badly, we must not push them through, so the reality of their dream feels spectacular when they do graduate.

On- line support system

I believe that being a good listener or just a sounding board is the key of any intervention you may have. If a student is timid to discuss a situation with a person face to face, I would love to see a online support system in our organization.

re: when do you let go

An open question...when you have tried all your tricks of the trade, have used all your tools in yours and your colleagues' toolbox, exhausted all your resources (both internal and external) and have spent endless hours - both awake and in disturbed sleep - to help a student maintain the path to his dream with little to no success...is it then time to let go?

Retention

Offering a solid curriculum for the subject and keeping the student aware of their goal and the positive results of sticking it out are worth while. Achieving ones goal may require many sacrifices.

Little by Little

When a student is in my office and is overwhelmed with school life, work life and personal life. I like to give them advice about how to take one thing at a time. Where ever they may be, home, school or work. They have to focus on the task at hand. Once they have executed that task they can move on. Because they now own it and no one can take that from them.

Retention

Reading RT101 explains retention in a different form so many should have a different out look. Even though instructor’s number 1 objective is to educate the student we all have to remember that everyone including our selves has to deal with day to day living. Some people are mature enough to deal with day to day living. Our younger more impressionable students fresh out of high school my need couching to aid with being away from home for the first time.

understanding attrition

I have found that students have not had the pleasure to deal with more adult problems, such as finances, which can lead to de-motivation in the classroom

retension

I have alway's found that by trying to help student stay motivated to return to class everyday, is to try and engage them in some sort of hands-on activity.

Instilling confidence

I have found that reassurance and the use of mnemonics during my electronics lectures can ease my students' fears of the "unknown". Via the careful use of reiteration during lectures, the exam scores soar, which directly elevate the confidence level; i.e. a very strong tool in the learning process. Analogies are also quite supportive. For the problematic cases, nothing is better than the "one on one" tutoring. Relating to the right to privacy laws, how does one recognize and handle an ADD, ADHD student without blatency? Short attention spans are not always earmarks.

Personal Encounter Time

Probably one of the biggest problems in our school is that we are face to face only 3 weeks at a time with a group of students. What I do is let out counselors know if I "feel" something isn't going properly with a student and hopefully they can give them more guidance.

Students need to succeed

If we as Instructors can help the students at the time the students needs us to, we may help the students overcome behavior problems and expres their trust in us for help in the future. Students need to succeed.

A Student's Expectation

I think the student's come to class and expect class control, so as not to disrupt their education. I believe they expect to have the topic of a lecture well laid out and rehearsed prior to class delivery and that the instructor have first hand knowledge of the subject matter. I believe they feel they should receive what they paid for, I also believe that they should know what they are supposed to receive for information, and not assume such. In the end there should be a proper explanation of what each subject matter will include at the start of a course, so the student will know if that subject matter has been covered and they have received at least what they have expected too.

students always come first, taking time to listen, understand, and comunicate with them is important to there education.

I look at the bright side of things and express that during my instruction to the students, staying positive is a always a plus.

What can be done with a student that has made up his mind to be miserable...

What do you do when a student has made up his mind to be miserable? He's already upset from something that transpired in one of the first classes he took. He went all the way to the top without satisfaction. Every class he goes to after that he comes in with a chip on his shoulder. You get him just before he is to graduate and he's in his last class. This has been festering for at least one year. What can be done to pacify (pacify is probably not the right word) this student.

We CAN help make that difference

This was a very informative and educating experiance
