If you're not organized and prepared how do you expect your students to be?
At the beginning of class I like to have written on the board the agenda for the day. Any assignments that are due within the next few days there will be reminders for. Any exams coming up there will be reminders for. By doing this I feel that the students feel that I am organized and they know what I expect from them.
Hi Anne:
Respect is earned and there is few better ways then to lead by example.

Hi Rachel:
Great. There are a lot of good ideas in the lessons and discussion forums. Better teachers will be organized and prepared because they care, as you've pointed out. Students will pick up on that too. It gives us a chance to be good role models.
Regards, Barry
Hi Maureen:
These are good reasons. I would add "to be sure the students learn what they're supposed to from the class". Lesser prepared teachers my spend time on wasted dialog or projects, where organized teachers are ready to get the essential material covered.

It not only shows respect for the students but demonstrates professionalism. I believe in setting an example for my students.
It shows the students you care about what you are doing with them. I really love the ideas here about colored handouts and worksheets for field trips! I will be using them from now on!
1. to make sure the class time will be productive
2. to show respect for my students
3. to set the example of how I expect my students to come to class.
There are probably more reasons, these are my top 3.
Hi Wayne:
Class, lab, asssignments, homework, really doesn't matter what the category or situation. We are the best role models for students to emulate in terms of being ready for class.
Regards, Barry
Hi Sophia:
When I'm prepared, I feel I'm ready to handle all portions of the lesson with confidence and available to address the unexpected, such as student questions or keeping on target.

Being organized and prepared for class set the tone and environment for the students. If you expect the students to be on time for class, have completed their assignments, and ready for class, we as instructors must set an example. This holds true for lab activities as well.
keep respect of the students. Meet the students class expectations.
Hi Jason:
Great axiom! We do lead by example and students are quick to pick up when an instructor is not prepared, has to fumble around, equipment isn't available or absent, in short, really, wasting the students time. A few minutes several times in a class begins to add up. We have a perfect opportunity to be good role models - we should take advantage of the time we have with our students. Time is so short and valuable.
Regards, Barry
I always go back to "Leadership by example". If as an instructor you are not organized and prepared each day how can you expect your students to be?
Hi Mary:
Boy, you've hit the nail on the head! Even a few minutes of wasted time is a disservice to our students. Very good point!
Regards, Barry
There are many reasons why a teacher should be prepared and organized, but a major reason is that there is a limited amount of time we are given to instruct the students, and every minute should be used productively. Also, if a teacher enters a room disorganized, it gives the students the impression that you don't care, that it isn't important. If they see it isn't important to you the instructor, they don't take it for having importance to them.
Hi Penny:
I think you're right that we have an opportunity each day to demonstrate "best practices" in being organized, resources prepared, and ready to go with enthusiasm and interest. Students will pick up on how well the teacher is prepared, so we have a golden opportunity to be super role models.

Hi Pamela:
Yes, and there are many successful (and some not so successful) methods to achieving these outcomes. It takes some planning and thought, mixed in with availability of resources, coupled with an effective delivery style that uses a variety of media. All together, then the teacher is ready.

Hi Victoria:
You've describe a good basic outline of one version of a prepared and organized teacher and classroom environment. It comes down to being ready, with all the needed resources planned ahead.

By being organized I believe this is showing my professionlism, which is something that I stress to my students. Professionalism and respect is a strong point in my class that I teach the first day.
