Hi Victoria:
Our job number one is to be ready (organized and preapared) for class and all that it encompasses. We have an opportunity to be good role models to our students too.
Regards, Barry
If the students are to learn a specfic amount of information, the instructor must be prepared to deliver what is needed to assist the student to learn.
To be able to direct students, beorganized and efficient!
Being organized and prepared for each class includes not only having the handouts copied at least a day before the class and laid out on a table, but also having a planned time frame when activites (lecture, small group discussion, or speakers or videos) will occur. There are times when the class does not always go as planned, and I have found it helpful to have a backup activity in mind if needed and keep flexible.
Hi Aaron:
"Today's work today" is an axiom I have taped next to my work computer. It helps me stay focused and avoid wasting time. I, too, like to have my class stuff together when class starts. Along with the previous axiom, below it is one that helps me in particular. It states: " Strive for excellence, not perfection". When I read these thoughout the day, my productivity increases.

In a course that meets for 2 hours and 15 minutes, 4 days a week, for 23 days, there is not a lot of downtime in the classroom, and so being prepared is critical to successful time management.
I try to never leave something that can be done today for tomorrow. I not sure who said something like that, but I tend to live by that rule. I try to make all of my handouts well in advance, just incase I have issues with the technology.
Not being prepared or giving off the appearance of disorganization does not help to prepare students for their carriers. As an instructor, I see part of my job as modeling behaviors that potential employers desire in an employee.
Hi Cindy:
Good example of using senses to augment learning!
Regards, Barry
Hi Cindy:
Good points. We want to be ready, which means we're prpared even if more or less time is needed, discussions go a different direction, or resources become unavailable. Experienced teachers will always have appropriate material ready for unexpected time variances.
Regards, Barry
you can also adapt what material you are using based on how students learn. If you find that most of your students are auditory learners, then you can perhaps use movies to augment the lecture.
Along with what others have already stated, it helps the instructor to be more confident, especially if they are a new instructor. Also, it helps to have additional material to use with the students in case you run out of material to talk about or what to change the direction of teaching.
Hi Rose:
When we're prepared we are ready to offer all that we have in relationship to the topic or lesson at hand, and that's what the student's expect of us. Organizing resources and planning ahead demonstrates to the students we are ready to teach, and also we can be role models of how students should be prepared as well.
Regards, Barry
Hi Mardi:
I agree and think students will model what they see their instructor doing. So, if the teacher is learly to class, has everything prepared, resources organized, and class ready to go, they set the example.
Regards, Barry
It helps the students have an idea of what will happen in the class not only for the day but also for the whole course.
Organization is part of preparing for your class. Especially in the teaching in the health care field, organization is necessary in the work place setting. Instructors should be an example for the students and be organized and prepared for the class.
Hi Todd:
As instructors we are responsible and accountable to our students to give the necessary information reqired in the course. Taking questions is certainly among those tasks. I think students questioning is a higher leval of learning, and they seem to retain information better when they are involved anhd participate in class this way.
Regards, Barry
I like to ready to field questions - by being prepared I can free up my time for discussion
Hi Carolyn:
True, we can be effective role models in our everyday preparation and demonstration of how professional individuals approach their job. We don't even have to say much or call attention to it, student's will pick up on it and the better ones will gravitate towards that "upward pull".
Regards, Barry
it is important to be organized for class. we teach students to take school work serious. If they see we are unorganized then all we are showing is our job isn't serious.
Hi Gerald:
Yes, I agree, Students know and can sense when their teachers are prepared and ultimately, an unprepared (or underprepared) teacher could have an adverse impact on the students learning.
Regards, Barry
To gain the confidence of the students. An organized instructor also gains the respect of the students and could act as a stimulus to learn.
