Education is not merely getting a degree, rather acquiring new skills and knowledge. Education is a tool to become a better self and grow professionally and personally.
Hi Julie,
Certainly, taking owenership will assist students while in scholl and, as you point out, when the begin working. Giving needed skills for a person's job, that bcould become a career is a tremendous opportunity and responsibility as well.

The goal of educating students is to ensure students have taken ownership of the information in such a manner as to apply what they have learned in any setting.
Hi Sherri,
If we can imprt the importance of interpersonal skills, along with the content subject matter, we will have achieved a worthwhile accomplishment.

My primary goal is to give them practical knowledge that they can use in the real world. I intend to develop their interpersonal skills, their people skills and make them extremely adaptable in their career choice.
To help them learn skills to be a productive worker in their particular career.
Hi Amina,
Good. Also, stories. I think students really like stories, which could be in the form of case studies, past "worst day" situtions, discussion of best practices in the work setting, etc. I know I can always gain the attention of students by using a story.

To me it is not just the bookish knowledge they would need, students learn thru examples, a good instructor teaches when a student learns.
Our goal as an instructor should be to instil in them the love of learning throughout life .
Education is Power.
Hi Jeff,
I think we are a tool that can begin to provide the knowledge skills, and attitudes needed for success. The students have to be responsible to take that information and translate it into tangible job readiness skills - and only they can do that. So, if we can aslo help learn to apply what they learned, we're helping them even more.

Hi Amber,
Very nice post. Carring for our students and recognizing they are all at different levels is a wonderful attribute for a teacher to have, and helps guide individuized instruction for students who may need it. If we're talking about successful student outcomes, this has to be among those traits that produce success.

Hi Alissa,
That "handling different obstacles" is a huge component of teaching. Getting students to think critically, not just mindlessly repeating what they've been shown ultimately separates the average student from the exceptional students.

Providing the students the knowledge required for individual and professional development.
When I provide education to students, I am helping them to learn skills they will use on a daily basis. The skills range from precision, to respect for self and others, to the development of hands on skills. These skills are developed thru time, patience, and practice. I work daily to help each student as an individual. I help them realize their weaknesses are nothing to be ashamed of, but an opportunity to grow and develop in the safe learning enviroment.
To give them the skill they need to succeed in their chosen field.
As a career college instructor, we educate from many different backgrounds. My goal as an educator is to provide my students the knowlege and skills to succeed in their careers and ability to handle many different obstacles that they may come across professionally.
Makila,
Great - I think you captured it. Also, these stronger graduates can be tapped as future guest speakers too!

Thomas,
I agree - I call it job readiness. But I would add that attributes such as communication, attendance, professionalism, dress, etc. - these are as important in both getting a job but also are directly tied to keeping it.
Regards, Barry
The goal is to provide students with the intellectual tools to be successful in their chosen fields.
The goal of educating students is to prepare them for their professional lives. Since they need both techical and soft skills to be successful, we are responsible for displaying them through traditional (lecture, exams, guest spaeakers, etc,.) means and through our professionalism.
Eddie,
I think our goal is job readiness along with other skills that will assure geeting a job, then keeping it.
