This is very true. Sometimes though, the class can go off on a tangent with open questions. You then need to bring it back to focus - closed questions can work well at this time.

open: How can the chart of equal temperament help an engineer during the mastering process?
I prefer open end questions.Students want to feel a part of class discussion and open end questions are a good start. It requires them to be more critical and creative thinkers.

Yes - and since those paradigms are revisited throughout the course, I try to apply them to other examples/concepts/situations as well.

To make it open-ended I could ask: How does our writing improve by using the steps in the writing process?
Closed: List the 3 commonly identified theoretical paradigms.
Open: Why could a knowledge of the three theoretical paradigms aid a person in understanding the objectives of the Occupy Wall Street movement?
Closed: Name the phase transitions in the refrigeration process.
Open: Can you tell me what the phase transitions in the refrigeration process are and how they are important to the process?
Closed: Does a computer use Alternating Current or Direct Current to power the components.
Open: Explain the differences between Alternating Current and Direct Current as it relates a computer.
Closed: What are the four chambers of the heart?
Open: Which chamber of the heart is the largest and why is it the largest?
Closed question: When resistance in a series circuit is increased, what happens to amps?
Open question: What are ways that resistance is increased in a series circuit? How would the load on the circuit respond?
