Class management is a critical part of educational planning because it maximizes learning for all students. It assists in creating an atmosphere conducive to learning. It also assists in maintaining a respectful, professional report with students.
As usual, I will take a different approach. Class management is crucial for success. Your success as an instuctor, the students success as a learner and for successful meeting of the learning objectives. Class management sets the stsage for organization, efficiency and standards. It reduces problems, allows for solutions, reduces anxiety and allows for smoother operation of the classroom. Effective classroom management sets the atmosphere for a professional instructor operating in a professional environment.
It sets an environment for learning. If class management is not consistent it can result in chaos. Students will leave class when they want. Assignments will be disregarded. If set policies and expectations are in place the student can be held accountable for their actions. The accountability for learning rests on the student but the environment for learning is the instructor's responsibility.
Class management is important for student success because it minimizes time off task. Students in career colleges have paid a great deal of money to be in school and they deserve and expect excellence in the classroom so any disruptions need to be handled effeciently. Another area of class management is preparation by the instructor... a good lesson plan is the best discipline plan! Also the instructor needs to keep the class on task by handling any disruptions quickly and effectively. Students need to receive feedback concerning assignments quickly.
Hi Matthew,
It is solely the instructor's responsibility to manage the class effectively. Students need us and expect us to be the leader in all areas of the classroom.
Patricia
I believe the way an instructor manages his class builds confidence with the students. As the students observe the progress of the class the instructor is able to assure that their students made the right choice in selecting the school. In addition, I believe a properly managed class will also have students perform better. The students will be more fully engaged and contribute more enthusiastically. In the end, the students will reflect more positively about the role of the class in their career development and eventual succes.
Hi Veronique,
Super response! As an educator it is our responsibility to ensure an environment that is conducive for learning. Students need and expect to have a controlled enviroment that is fully managed by the instructor.
Patricia
Classroom management is absolutely critical. I need to plan ahead for unforseen issues so that I am better able to deal with them as they come up. By including classroom management in my educational planning, when issues do arise, I do not waste as much valuable classroom time in dealing with them. Students, for the most part, are coming to my class with a goal in mind. I need to manage these students well in order to meet the different learning needs of my varied students in a way that the entire class is able to gain knowledge in attending my classes.
I think that it's crucial for instructors to follow-up on all assignments. Students need that to stay on track. If this is lacking, students sense a missing link in the chain, and start developing bad habits as far as turning in assignments, term papers, etc.
A teacher needs to make sure that the students are attaining what they need throughout the course. They need to monitor their course delivery, content, etc., and make any necessary changes along the way to ensure that the students are on tract, that the presentations are adequate and the final results will pay off. Students need to feel that the teacher knows what they are doing.
Hi Kerry,
I concur! Our students deserve nothing more than the best! We must provide an environment that will allow teaching and learning to take place.
Patricia
In the absence of effective class management, successful teaching/learning will most likely be impossible, and students clearly don't deserve that!!!!!!!!
Hi Laura,
Establish rules on Day 1. Adults in most cases are worse than children. At my institution we have an attendance policy that pertains to being late from breaks. Perhaps, you can implement your own classroom policy about this or present an institution policy to your DOE.
Patricia
Hi James,
Students really and truly deserve the best student experience, and as instructors we are to ensure this happens by providing great classroom management. Students expect us and want us to manage the classroom effectively.
Patricia
The class has to managed properly in order for e veryone in the class to get the best student experience possible
As a new instructor I am learning how important it is to set the expectation of even the very basic things such as returning from break on time. The mistake I made was thinking as adults they knew to do this. Once I noticed the students wondered in when ever they felt like it, I set a time to return. When they still returned late. I noted to them that as an employer I would have to consult with them on their pattern of returning late from break. In my work experience this was a big issue. So I have to keep on task even with the basics.
Hi Glenn,
I too am a 20-year veteran, and I am certainly learning each day as well. It sounds as though you and I have the same outlook when it comes to teaching. I stress to the new instructors the importance of teaching on the hour. Once you set the precedence your students will either sink or swim.
Patricia
Setting the stage. I believe it begins in the first minute of the first class. I start on time even if students are still walking in the door. It lets all students know what the expectation are, how the class will be managed. It is also important in the review of the syllabus, to cover breaks, start time and finishing on time. As an instructor for over 20 years, I still learn something in every class I teach.
Hi Kaytha,
Students expect to learn in an environment that is conducive for learning. We must do our jobs to manage the classroom effectively.
Patricia
I feel class management is the most important stragie for conductive learning. If your students see that an instructor is prepared and has paved the way it is more confortable and easy to follow.
