how to handle students who yell out answers.

I have quite a few of these students, and yes, while they are quite smart, they think that they can just yell out the answer without allowing others to answer. I'm tempted th try the old "dinner table" trick. Whoever has the pot-holder, can speak. I'm in a nursing program, so I could use a piece of nursing equipment. What does everyone think?

As an instructor if you do not open the door in the begining with your students, when you are going over expectations alot of times we loose them. Thats why as an instructor we have to create a positive enviroment.

Being on a campus so diverse and multicultural, has its challenges- everyone getting along, in a kitchen setting sometimes can be explosive!!

Class Discussions

With a larger class (more than 25 students), do you find it's better to encourage free-flowing discussions or have students raise their hands to contribute individually? I don't want quieter students to be overrun by the more vocal ones, but sometimes smaller discussion groups are not always appropriate for the situation.

The wrong question is the one you did not ask

Hello Everyone, Asking your peers for advice should never been seen as a bad thing. Sometimes pride takes over in people, and they continue to do things improperly, just because they are afraid to ask a question. The book made a great point when stating, "Instructors by their very nature like to help", which I find is true every time.

You cannot stay silent in real life

Hello Everyone, Working with the silent students, can sometimes be the toughest. As the book suggested, working in smaller groups is always a great way to get people to work together. Taking it a step further, I like to hand out colored cards to the class, and each class I have them get into different groups, depending on the cards. For instance the first time all the cards with the same color will be in the same group, but the next time, everyone in the group has to have a different colored card. This way it helps to ensure that all students gets to hear all of their peers, and not just their small group of friends or class neighbors.

Sticking to your rules

Hello Everyone, This post follows my last post for chapter one. The one area I constantly work on is treating each student the same, and as this chapter points out, the best tool to use can be your class syllabus. One effective way to get the students to understand that you have been around the block, is to have them email a soft copy of the syllabus they were given (or got online), and state in so many words that they have read and understand the syllabus, and agree to other items such as the grading scale. I have found this method to work very well, as you can always use their original email as a signed contract that they stated they have read and understood the syllabus.

Ensure deadlines are met

Hello Everyone, The one topic in this chapter that really stands out is how to handle students who do not turn their homework in, in a timely manner. Of course anyone can come up with real world issues, but as a professional instructor, you need to ensure that you do not let yourself become the one teacher who is always allowing students "the easy way out". This not only affects the honest students in your class, but it also effects your fellow instructors as those students that leave your class now expect all instructors to "let them slide", "turn it in a day late", "turn in partial work for full credit".

Center-stage-students

The lesson on this subject is probably a very powerful strategy!!! I wish I had thought of it! I encounter this challenge often and have been "scratching my head" wondering how to properly remedy this. The "observer" and "use-it-wisely" techniques are brilliant! Thank you!

How to gain respect from the students

As an Instructor you have to be professional with your students at all times. You have to show and give respect. always listen to your students concerns and have your class busy at all all times. be ready to answer all your students questions with respect and professionalism.

How to deal with an angry student

Speak with the student, listen to the student and try to help the student on anything that he has a concern, maybe he is not understanding the concept of the class or assignments and maybe he or she has a full time job and don't have time to study. Find out what is making the student to be angry.

ED113 manageing the Adult classroom

after going through this curriculum multiple times, I finally feel that I at least understand the concepts relating to Instructor styles, IE: plan for success, make a good 1st impression, be proactive, encourage proper behavior,school wide discipline and classroom discipline. looking forward to testing these theories.

Be up front

It is important to be upfront with the students on the first day of class as to what the expectations of them are. I review sections of the student handbook and make sure each student has a copy or the website of the online version. I keep a copy of the student handbook available in the class hallway and in each classroom. A rereview of the dress code is done midway through the class and a quiz on the student handbook is done the last week. As adults the students appreciate knowing what is expected. I have noticed that at times the class will self correct itself or will quiet the disturber. This tends to be well received by the disturber. What efforts do you make to ensure the students know what is expected of them?

Listen first - Apply Consequences Later

I am an administrator at an adult career college. The program I administer is rigorous and has very high expectations for student learning. Usually when the students in my program are stressed it manifests itself in attacks against teachers or polices. I have found that just calling the student into my office and saying something like: "Wow, you seem really unhappy/stressed out/frustrated/etc - tell me what's up" is the most often the key to resolving the problem. If you sit and listen, ask questions for clarification,validate their feelings and let them know that you want them to get the best education possible - that alone is often the solution rather than changing policies or faculty methods. Once they feel heard and know that you care about them, much of the hypercritical "noise" goes away.

works alone better

I have a student that does great by himself but if asked to work in a group he is easily irritated and frustrated. Any suggestions as to guide him to work better with others?
