I like to incorporate real life scenarios into the lecture. This helps the students to see that the nursing profession is a very serious profession. It hink the textbook is great but incorporating the real lie scenarios will assist the student in becoming successful.

I always refer to my experiences from industry I have been working for many years. Those experiences cannot be learned from book, and they are good motivation for students to learn their subjects.

Sometimes it is difficult set-up my mind as instructor from been a designer at my own studio. I tend to treat my students as my employers. So, I come to school at least one and half earlier that actual class time and start mental preparation to be an instructor. That way , I would make less careless mistakes.

I have student who thinks he knows everything taught in class and keeps intrupting the lecture. Finally, after 104 course, I know how to deal with her. I asked her if she wants to take extra challenging work as an extra credit, so she was happy and classroom continued on without intruption.

I had 1 assignment for our class, it was about making an OSHA Guideline Manual. The students worked in groups. 1 specific group so grossly plagiarized, we are talking every page almost in its entirety, that I was stupefied. I had no idea how to handle this. I spoke with several other instructors and then with the department head. In all honesty I did not think they did it to plagiarize, I think they really had no idea how to NOT plagiarize. Although I had given them numerous opportunities to discuss their assignments, this group never utilized those opportunities. School policy mandated dismissal. I could NOT bring myself to doing that, knowing this was an inadvertent case and completely unintentional. So instead I chose to grade their assignment accordingly, based on the rubric. They received a 37 out of 200. It was appalling. However, I did clarify to them upon assignment review, the options were limited. Course dismissal or grade accordingly, which would they have preferred? They understood my stance and were appreciative. It was heart-wrenching none the less. My favorite., however, was the young lady that chose to slide her cell phone onto her lap while taking the final exam. She sat in the very last row, and I saw her, from my seat up in the front, scrolling. Mentally I was going through the "are you kidding me" and "you have got to be out of your mind" statements. I very nonchalantly walked the room, eventually ending in the back of the classroom leaning against the windows. While there, she slowly slid the phone off of her lap back onto a chair beside her, ALL of which I was privy to witness. Without disturbing the remainder of the class, I quietly walked over to her and whispered in her ear "I saw what you did and you know I did. You can consider this a failure for your final" and I walked back up to my desk. A few minutes later she came up and handed in her exam, saying nothing to me. I proceeded to document the entire situation and observation and handed it in to my department chair, who then documented it in the school files. I was completely amazed by her, more in shock than anything. And this was my first class I had ever taught. Has anyone else faced a situation like this? How was it handled? Do you think I handle;ed either or both of situations appropriately or do you have suggestions for what I should have done differently?

Teaching these students with strong personalities can and is such a challenge sometimes. When a person like that is in my class, I see the other students change their behavior as well and I try to redirect my attention away from the strong personality and create and environment that encourages everyone to have a chance to speak or demonstrate. Sometimes they can get a little too outspoken and then I have to "talk them down" a little. It is definitely a challenge at times

I believe every semester, you will find one or two students who are angry with financial aid or other outside issue, which will bring their frustration and disturbances to the class. The biggest issue of class interruption is cell phone usage and text messaging. when they are asked to stop they get irritated.Sometime very abusive, and makes it very difficult to continue the class.

My philosophy is that homework is where you learn. Other assessment, such as tests, papers and projects is where you demonstrate your learning. I grade homework on completion. It is easier on me and less stressful on my students.

Students need to know what behaviors are acceptable and what won't be tolerated from the first day of class. It is important for instructors to be attentive and listen. Instructors are challenged by students negative attitude, but instructors who try to make connections between students and their interests can help to improve students' attitudes by showing them how the material they are learning is interesting and practical.

I have noticed the challenge with students today is the usage of their cell phones. We have a policy of no cell phone use in class, but the challenge is when you notice student trying to sneak and text during class.

Depending on the individual, there are different ways of dealing with stress.

Always have a strategy on what you day is going to be like, and have a back up plan is things go wrong.

I seem to be very particular about being prepared for class. I spend, I've been told, too much time preparing for lectures. I want to do a good job and sometimes I don't trust the knowledge that I have. Aside from the fact that my students like to go to the Ed Director. I am experiencing two different types of insecurity here. Any comments?

The Course 113 is a great course to take if you want to learn about different Classroom Management Styles. I was able to determine that I was the "GUIDE". I found this course to be a useful resourse in the proper techniques to get a students attention as well as useful dicipline tips. Would recommend for the beginner or experienced Instructor.

I am going to use making a list to reduce my stress. Great idea.
