Thats a good idea. Then you wont get those "I didnt know that" type statements. Sometimes there are those that just need things repeated to them.

Preparation is the perseption of knowledge.

My third grade teacher Mrs Stromer was one of the most influential people in my life . One of the reasons was that she came to class always always ready to be with us 100% and as a result of this I feel now as I felt then for me to grasp a mind that may or may not of had a good experience in school should be able if not willing to recieve all that I can give as an instructor and it is basic educational policy that I come organized and prepared to give these students the gift that Mrs Stromer gave me and that was to give the respect that the students want and need by coming into that class room ready to give them what they have requested of me. I know that their were days when Mrs Stromer did not want to be there but she was ready to teach when we were in class

The students will be more focused if the instructor is organized

Class goes much smoother. This also lends credibility to the instrctor.

Yes, I think the same way, the student come to class ready to learn and is very important that the teacher is ready with all the materials she need to teach the class, not waisting any time making copies or organizing at the last minute.

Organization is key in everyclassroom setting because it gives the students confidence in their instructor. Being late or unorganized gives them a poor example.

Hi Paul:
I believe the very basic responsibilty we have as teachers, even new teachers, is to prepare. Like practice, our presentation and lesson is going to be flat without planning, thought, and effort in gathering needed resoyrces, and materials students will need.

Hi Yvonne:
1. You have to believe in yourself and your ability to teach.

2. Positive affirmations can help, sort of mental "self-speak" that provides self encouragement and inner stregth

3. Competence leads to confidence. Really, they go hand in hand, one leapfrog ging over the other.

4. Face reality: You have skills, education, training, experience, and know your material. Now remember, most of your students don't come even close to what you have to offer.

5. Go with the flow. It's only natural to be a little hesitant to take command and control over the activity of others. So relax, be calm, and be willing to laugh at how silly some things are, or even if you make mistakes. Students will appreciate a teacher who will admit mistakes and enjoy the humor of a situation with their class.

6. Share stories. Students like stories; it keeps their attention and interest. Soon, they'll be looking forward to comining to class.

Good Luck!

They will impress the students

I think in an adult learning setting, it shows respect for the students and their time. They are busy just like we are and like to know that their time is not being wasted with tasks like organizing the work for the day or making copies.
It is very important to be prepared!

Best way to show confidence in my opinion is to always be prepared. If you know the material, are fully prepared to teach to a diverse group, then you will automatically exude confidence....even if you don't feel you do.

It also helps to build the learner's confidence in the instructor.

Lack of organization and preparedness by an instructor is the first thing students will see as they are greeted into a new course. If students are motivated enough to move forward with their education, the first expectation is to have instructors motivated enough to be prepared to teach them. There are few things that will de-motivate a student faster than lack of preparedness by their instructor.

What is the best way to show/express confidence (esp. if you feel that you are lacking it)?

Hi Richard:
Prepared teachers have put time, thought, effort, and planning into each class session. Organizing the materials needed, gathering resources, and making time for students. Smooth, calm and logical sequencing of topics, and assuring all objectives are met will be the result - and students will notice.

The class I teach requires that the students come mentally prepared, then physically prepare their materials, then execute their preparations. I need to prepare both to be a good example, as well as to successfully achieve what is generally a very comprehensive lecture/demonstration class. I would lose credibility quickly, not to mention exhibit incompetence id I was to start my class unprepared.

I believe it is very important for the instructor to have themselves and the course material together and well organized. I think this conveys to the student that your are well organized and in control

Every class I put objectives on the board so the class knows what topics we are discussing for that class period. The objectives for the class are also on the syllabus so the students now what the expect. This also keeps me on target and on track.

It gives the students a sense of security knowing that they have an instructor who takes the time to prepare ahead of time; it will also make the day more smooth if the instrucotr has everything that she or he will be needing for the class.
