Sean,

These are good examples. Do you use them in class?

Phil,

This is true and sometimes we need to use closed-ended questions when time is limited.

Closed Question: What is the purpose of using a "System of Systems" analysis in understanding the operational environment?

Open Question: Why is it important we use a "system of Systems" analysis to understand the operational enivonment?

Is exposure to radiation harmful?
Why do you need to be concerned about the amount of radiation you expose your patients to?

Nicole ,

Do you use both types of questions in class?

Judy Mohammed

I definitely prefer open type questions. They give you a better understanding of what the student has or hasn't learned. Also, as Mr. Parker stated above, it tends to draw more students into the discussion.

Do you want to be a Cosmetologist?

What are the steps you need to take , to reach this goal?

John,

There are opportune times to use closed questions, mainly when you are limited with time.

Phil,

Very good examples. Do you prefer open or closed questions?

Judy Mohammed

Jeremiah,

Good example of turning one type of question into another. Do you use these in class?

Judy Mohammed

I learned that closed ended questions hardly get students engaged in open discussions as compared to open ended questions.

What sensor is used to detect a misfire? This question is almost always followed up with the open ended question "How does it determine that a misfire is present?"

one closed question that is often used in my course is "what are the primals for beef from head to tail?" this could be revised by asking the students "plese explain the the anatomy and break down of a beef carcass?".

Paul,

These are good examples. Do you use these questions in classes?

What is the standard proportion of water to rice when cooking white rice? Why is this proportion different for sushi rice?

Melissa,

Good examples! Do you use these questions in class?

Closed: What is a budget?

Open: Explain how you might use a budget to manage money more effectively.

Lacey,

Good examples! Which do you prefer to use, closed or open questions?

Judy Mohammed

Shaghayegh,

I agree, both types are important. Students get more involved though with application questions and you find out more about what they know with open questions. I use closed questions in an effort to save time.
