Kris,
I am glad that you found the course helpful. I find that questioning is an integral part of teaching and learning.

It also opened my eyes to the different types of questions. I was unaware that there were different types before taking the course. It taught not only what the different questions types were but how to utilize them in class. This was a very helpful course.
I teach dental assisting, so I am also able to ask both types of questions. I use closed questions to get my students to recall factual data, and will ask open questions by giving them real life senarios of certain situations playing out in a dental office. Ex: What would you do if...? or In this situation, how would you answer the patient's question? In my field, I believe both forms of questioning are very valuable and necessary.

I ask this type of closed question all day long in my practical pastry classes, but I was surprised at how easy it is to formulate the open question. I like that it requires more critical thinking and really drives home the idea of ingredient function.

Sandra,
It is true that open ended questions take more time but this is when you need to know how to control the discussion. I find that planning time for discussion is very helpful.

I'm guilty of tending to use more closed questions in the classroom. After viewing this webinar I realize the importance of open ended questions to increase student's knowledge. In teaching, I tend to focus more on the lesson plan, but forgot to take into account the importance of asking open ended questions in the classroom. But, I would include open ended questions on my exams.

In nursing we teach about therapeutic communication and data collection. Two major question categories are used: closed and open. Similarly to classroom strategies, closed questions should not be overused, but be in combination with open ended questions, as they provide better feedback.
For Management Principles:
Closed: What are the four functions of management?
Open: What are the four functions of management and why is each function important to being a successful manager?
I usually start my class with blended questions of what happened the class before in order to get everyone thinking and involved. Once one student answers, he/she must call on another student to answer the next question. I don't allow students to call on someone that has already answered. They can always use their notes and books if they are not sure of an answer.
