Hi Brandi,
Class management is a must. Things get way out of control whenever the instructor does not manage the classroom effectively.
Patricia

This is so important because the class will feel like they are of value when class management in on order

Hi Crystal,
Students need good management. It sounds like you do a fine job managing your students. It also appears that you are very organized. I like how you give your students the agenda. Students appreciate knowing what is planned and what is a head of them. I sometimes even let my students know the agenda for the week.
Patricia

You can have a huge knowledge base and be brilliant at what you do, but to be a successful instructor you have to have the management piece in place. I have learned that I have to be prepared with set objectives that fit the allotted time. I try to stay on schedule, reteaching when neccessary, but then monitoring and adjusting to catch up to where I want the class to be at a given time in the quarter. Although I want the students to take ownership in the class, I also need for them to know I am in charge. Students seem to appreciate seeing the agenda for the day,as well as the new assignment written on the board when they enter the classroom. It seems to help them see exactly what the the class period will look like. I list the material we will cover, including pg.numbers and handouts, group and partner activities, breaks, etc. Management is often a larger part of being a successful instructing that one realizes.

I too like this idea - it can keep them focused so we know everyone is on the same page. I often give them "handouts" that list the topics with a large gap under each topic for their notes from lecture. They seem to enjoy it and I feel it makes it clear that these notes are important and should be studied and held onto.

I always try to have a detailed class agenda so i know what I'm doing each class. however, in reading the course materials I saw the idea of handing out notes to the students that cover jsut the key points in the class. I like this idea. However, what do people think of using the "class notes" as a provocation for the students by telling them that I'm going to be covering the points and challenging them to ask question or debate the points? I would think having htem use the notes to "keep me on track" and to explore how what I'm talking fits into the notes might help them remember what was talked about.

I've found that class management is important because there are a variety of mindsets that come to each class, and if I can't turn all of them in the right direction (reaching the objectives of each class meeting), our experience loses its value fairly quickly. It's never a perfect process because of the differing levels of distractions we each bring to class, but it's my job as the instructor to try keep everyone, including myself, as focused as possible.

Hi Jeffrey,
You are definitely on the ball. Students need and want structure. Things will be very chaotic if classroom management was not involved. I have heard students say time and time again, the instructor needs to control the class. I can tell you are in control of your classes.
Patricia

Hi Michele,
Students really and truly need someone to look up to. They mock a lot of what they see, therefore, we need to set a great example professionally.
Patricia

Yes, this is a clear demonstration of leading by example. Students respect professionalism and it helps them to model the behavior they need to exhibit in their career.

Class management is essential because it helps keep things moving in the right direction. I know that if I do not have a plan for how my class is to be run, things tend to fall apart.

Classroom managment is important to maintain order that they students come to school for. As a instructor with a large amount of production and many peices in order to make the day successful students need to have the day laid out for them and someone to show them how to lead the day. By making a time line they know that they can accomplish the day. Managment allows for the insturctor to show their ability to be in charge and builf rapport and trust for the class.

Hi Estella,
You have it! The instructor sets the tone for the entire class. The instructor must be on point at all times.
Patricia

Hi Susan,
Absolutely! How do you go about maintaining control of the classroom?
Patricia

It has been my experience that students feel more satisfied with themselves at the end of the day, they feel more accomplished, and their attitude is ready for the following class when I have my act together. I also have a better time and am looking forward to our next meeting with enthusiasm.

Because real learning cannot take place in chaos. When the environment is conducive to learning then real learnig can take place.

Without it you could end up losing your students attention and you will have lost your ability to teach them.

Hi Maureen,
Things truly happen unexpectedly in the teaching profession. We are never suppose to let our students see us sweat... we must keep our composure and professionalism.
Patricia

Clearly everyone who chose this topic to respond to cares about class management. Whether we are teaching math or how to butcher a pig our preparation shows. For those times when a wrench gets thrown into our game plan, how we respond is a most valuable lesson to our students. Are we adept and agile in the face of a challenge? I find that in addition to the reasons stated herein, the most important part of educational planning is leaving room to deal with those things that can't be planned. When everything else is handled, emergencies and crisis management is more easily managed too.

Class management is a critical part of education planning because all the class content must be covered so that students acquire the skill sets to take them to the next level.
