Field Trips

I teach Audio Technology. I find that getting the students out of the class room and into a real studio is invaluable. Classroom time is always important, but physically taking a trip really stimulates interests in my students.

Tech

I mix lecture, with videos and good old common sense, demos with tastings and face to face evaluations, its from the heart and I let them see it and its very intimate. Just us and it works!

Taxomony

we use big words to a generation that is tech driven and they don't really know what we are talking about unless they look it up via the I phone- is that learning?? or remembering to forget to get a grade..

student input

They all have a voice, some guided, some misguided and some think they run the class. Giving away the power and letting them think they have it, is something else. Pulling them back to the center is real learning, for all of us..

students

I always start the first day with a bio questionaire as a starting point for me, for them

What is the goal of educating students

I want my students to be successful in the field that they choose,so I try to help them by sharing experiences, information, knowledge,in a way that is fun, interesting, and that helps them to use their imagination,so that they are truly excited about what it is they have learned and how they can put it into action.

Avoiding unprepared students should start with admissions?

Sometimes we are given a bad crop of students by our colleges admissions team. A good way to avoid is I have found is frequent communication with the admissions team so they understand the rigors and expectations of the curriculum and convey this to their prospects.

Prepackaged power points.

What do you guys do when you receive pre-packaged power points presentations. I generally just get familiar with them and skip to the parts I can use, telling the students to use the rest as a resource. What do you guys do?

make up

I feel that sometimes make up test arent helpful if that student has missed multiple days .

Learnnin plans

I try ot take multiple approaches at each task to ensure that everyone developes the skillls necessary to do the job.

Power points

Power points are ver informative and I use them mostly for visual aids as far a showing my students parts and components.

field trips

Going on field trips has greatly helped with motivating and retention!

Integration of technology

In the field of cosmetology traditionally the course is taught through application and theory. However, with the surge of social media many trends and cutting edge techniques are being featured in video clips that are up-loaded in-line. Being able to use avenues such as these brings another dimension to the classroom, improving the dynamic of both teaching and learning.

Objectives

I thought the list of questions posed during the "writing objectives" section are a great asset during those time the subject matter is so broad.

Documenting

I've always kept my lesson plans in a folder for easy access. However, it never occurred to me to back them up in case of fire or any other tragedy. This is a tip I will employ in future semesters.

Getting to know your audience

I can appreciate the idea of employing the use of "ice breakers" in the classroom. I've found that employing this strategy to ascertain the climate of the classroom works well. Even in cases where you may have former students taking another class with you.
