Creating the right teaching climate in the classroom

Using reliable, tested learning assessment tools, instructor tailors instructional delivery that will benefit each olassroom student for optimal learning.

Delivering new course material

I like to keep things interesting , so i try different thing when i teach a new objective. I do feel nervous about it but i have to try new things in order to improve my ways of teaching. After all , if i dont make mistakes i will never learn from them . Some of the ideas that are mentioned in this course are some that i allready implement in my lesson plans and they trully work . For example:start with a quote or start by reading something factual relevante to the objective. This help me start and engage the students attention and hook them to the lecture.

Groups and the "aha" moment

Sometimes with more difficult topics ill have the class get into random groups and I have found it really helps with the understanding the information when their peers are helping them.

Getting to that ONE lazy student

I teach college mathematics. I learned at an early age a lot of people struggle with math, have a fear for it. It came so easily to me which is one of the reasons I wanted to teach math. I was determined to communicate the concepts in a way that everyone could understand. I knew it could be done. I have done a pretty good job and I'm proud to say that when I'm done with a term most of my students feel more confident with math and that makes me happy. However, I always have one or two students that have the capability but have horrible study skills and are quick to give up. I can clearly see its not that they don't understand but are not applying themselves enough. I'm a younger instructor whose background is with children but I'm at a lost of how to get through to this adult who may be old enough to be my parent. What advice can you give me?

Active learning

I am quiet impressed with this course it has given me a clear picture how to get student involve in activities, Active learning is a best tool which can help intrutor to get invole every student in class activity. Helps instructors to deal with bad students and to change their attitudes

Planning and preparation

It is very important to plan ahead. I always read my material prior to teaching it , it trully helps me understand what i will be teacjing about and refresh any topic i might have difficulty with . This also helps me prepare for any questions that students migh have about the objecyives being presented.

Students grading

students grading should be base on their performance. Of course other class activities do matters.

My instructional style

I am a new instructor and about to complete my first year teaching. I have found that mayking your own style as an instructor really help me in having my students feel more confortable and open minded to learn. At first i was very nervous and did not know what to expect, but after a few months my personality and style of teaching emerged. This made the class more fun and interesting for my students and most important they were learning.

Motivator

I constantly encouarge my students to come to tutoring or study sessions. I even talk about how I attended some study sessions myself during college. I say this to encourage them to participate and take advantage of the opportunity to expand their knowledge of the subject.

Students' personal baggage

In a world where everyone loves ascribing to themselves labels that are debilitating on some perceived level, there are some students that, consciously or not, revel in it. Being model, manager and motivator can be perceived as an exercise in tact to some instructors.

syllabus content

If an instructor is truly self actualized in terms of teaching style, there is no need for him/her to feel like he/she is forced into becoming a machine, as I have heard newer instructors complain. It is the basis for more, much as it is described herein.

getting to class early

Most important to do a technology run through, no matter how long you have been at a campus--other instructors using the room do crazy things with the equipment sometimes....

Small group self assesments

As a potentially high risk exercise, do others find that having the group do self progression assessments a way to keep everyone involved and equally participating? I do this for groups of 4 or so when working on a 5 week project.

Students as friends vs. students as pals

It's like Schopenhauer's porcupines--only with conditional needles, and unconditional warmth.

assessment testing format

A wide variety or use of all the test formats will ensure that the content of the subject matter is applied by the student in that no matter how a question is asked the student is able to determine the answer.

student learning assessments

These are important for both the instructor and the student. The instructor can use the assessments to determine if the information is delivered, retained and applied in accordance with the course syllabus.

student participation

This is a very effectice way to understand the level of understanding that the class has regarding the subject matter. Open discussion will allow the instructor to determine if the intended concept is received by the class.

Students with learning needs

I have students with learning disabilities are some of my best students. When they tell me about their learning disability I make the effort to afford them what they need to be successful. I find they are also willing to help other students in the same situation.

student learning styles

It is important to incorporate all learning styles in the adult learner setting to challenge them to become diverse and able to learn in all environments. This will best prepare them for the workforce which is ever changing and diverse.

Students with learning needs

I have found in every class that I will have at least one or two students with learning disabilities. They often feel they have never been successful in school and are easily discouraged. With positive motivation and using learning tactics to reenforce their abilities they are are motivated learners.
