New Leads

I'm very new to the admissions position and even more foreign to the allied health industry. Having confidence and a lot of access to references has helped me transition to my new job. I can't know everything but I do appreciate the intranet and the phone conferences that we have, that help me stay compliant and to do my job comfortably.

Admissions Process

With the new documents needed for FMTI's admissions process, thank goodness for the check list, because it's a lot but I appreciate them, because they help keep in line with the regulations. I don't have time to know everything, but I have familiarized myself with as much as I can. I feel as if I stick with the plan that was written out for me, I will be ok. Anything outside of those plans, I can reference the regulations, and or reach out to someone who knows.

We should know our catalog inside and out. we also need to be careful with what we say to new students as they will turn everything around to their benefit.

Catalogs & Enrollments

We should be up-to date with all and any changes so that we may add or remove from our catalogs and enrollment agreements.

Admissions Test

Should there be an Admissions test?

The goal of a Salesperson is to sell. It is assumed, when hiring one, that they are an encouraging 'body' to use their 'product'. In education the 'product' is taking a course/class/degree program etc; How does a conflict of interest in respect to urging students to attend school not interfere with the motivation to be an ethical one?

Accreditation

Not all schools are require to be accredited although in some cases is mandatory. However it's important to let students know this information prior to enrollment in the school as this can be an important deciding factor.

Learning center resources

All schools should have a learning center for students to go for help either with papers or to understand the material. The learning center I have found that is very helpful and improves student's grade and chances of approving the state exams.

Salary, fee and catalog information

Many students come to our school hoping to change careers to obtain a better job. They often ask for job outlook and salary expectations. It's ok to increase slightly the amount of salary they're expected to earn. The truth is they will be making more than their current salary. Plus with continuing education the salary increases. We always give them a catalog and enrollment information before they register for classes. It's important they read about the classes they're taking and know the fees they're paying.

Staying Current

Schools regulations change often in the state to improve the experience for the students. In order for schools to stay current they have to comply with new regulations. For this reason admission representatives always need to obtain new information, stay current and attend training.

Knowing your environment

How important is to feel happy and comfortable working in your institution? How important is to know what is going on in every department? Why is important to be aware of any event the education department has going on? Career services events are very important? All these questions are all part of what you need to be aware of while working for your institution. As an experienced admission's representative, i have learned that when you are meeting a prospect students, you will ask so many questions that would allow you to know the prospect student. Therefore, by you knowing all the answers to the questions above and staying informed not only will you be able to make a connection with the student to the school and the program but also you will gain someone's respect in knowing your stuff. This is what helps you to make relationships stronger and longer in the environment where you work.

Transfering of Credits

Can another institution not accept another schools credits just because they are the competor. Is this regulated by the state in anyway?

Meetings

Meetings are and should be a vital part to any Institution. In my personal experience I have learned that through my Student Services weekly meetings that it is a time for all of us to share what our weekly agendas and for the rest of the staff to share as well. This is also a time for us to have an open floor for any new information someone may have that the rest of the staff may not know about just yet. Meetings should be a time for everyone in your department to share new information and findings they may have discovered over the last week so we can all remain on the same page. Communication is key!

Resource Notebook

I used to work for a school couple of months back and the main resource book we used to call was third part book. This book was all the same information in every admissions representative working there. We had to all have the same regulations in the order that the institution wanted it in. More like a uniformed book. This book contained some of the information that was in the catalog, but also images and descriptions of each individual program which included curriculum, hours, and requirements of each. It also contained per program the print out of the Salary range that we pulled per career from the BLS.gov website highlighting the date it was printed. This book was made to help every representative to represent the program and other features of the school. Last but not least it contained testimonials of the very students graduating from each program. I thought it was an awesome way to show the schools' success.

Effective Marketing

My organization does not invest much on marketing. I see billboards and internet adds for most career colleges. Does the return on investment on advertising beat the enrollment contributions of recruiters?

Admissions & Marketing

After reading through this information, I find it a must for the marketing/community development coordinator to be up to date on all rules and regulations when speaking to audiences about enrollment at their institution. What methods have been proved to be successful in the past for making sure the Admissions Director & Marketing Team know they're on the same page? Any suggestions to ensure everyone is promoting the same information to key publics?

Education vs Experience. Which is more valuable to employers?

I have over 20 years of experience leading Soldiers and thought that experience alone can land me a high paying job after military service. When I started to look for my second career after retirement, I quickly realized that the jobs I wanted, even those ones that I was already doing in the military, required a degree to even apply for.
