Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

Retention

This is an ongoing issue for all career schools.

Intervention

All students are different. Some will welcome help & other will resist. It's importaint not to get too much in the personal business of others.

Stress

Stress is a killer. It can cause all kinds of health problems in our indusrty.

retention

This is everyones job, in the whole sch!ool

Improving Retention

I really feel that reaching out to students is critical in making them feel as if they are a very important aspect to what we do. It does work both ways. It seems that even with meetings, or pep talks, it is really never enough.

Intervention

I agree that most students never tell you about a problem that has swayed them to drop from a program. Is is alright to ask a student if they have a problem or if there is anyway to help?

Retention

I feel if students are not pushed, sometimes with very positive feedback, they feel as if they may not have what it takes to perform in a future class.

Retention

I seems as though a lot of students have so many issues with staying in school. I see more students dealing with financial problems or they just become disenchanted with a program.

Students in control

I agree with Enrique...let the students have the powe...In a controled enviroment (of course)

Counsling

It would be helpful if we as faculty were offered courses in crisis management as we are the ones directly dealing with students in crisis.

Orientation

The first day of class I always introduce myself, and inform them of my background, then I asked them to introcuce themselves, tell me what elective they are taking, where they are from, and what they expect from the school...

Being prepared for the students!

We begin each class with a thorough overview of the instructors credentials, what is expected of the students and what the school can provide to help them be successful. I is plain that being successful also means hard work.

Classroom Expectations

My first day is full of information on our objectives, who am I and why I think I can teach them something in three weeks. I show them the room and what we will be working with. Show them the lab projects and the grading procedures. They have been in school here awhile so they have questions I can answer right off and make them feel more organized and comfortable in my class. I think this all helps keep them in my class and in school.

first day orientation

I always prepare for the first day, I explain to the students the importance of the class and how it will relate to their first year working in the field. We talk openly about what I expect from them in class and they are able to also be open with me about what they expect to get from the class, I show credibility by explaining my experience level and success rate for students. I believe that if a student shows me they have the desire to do the job that I can and will teach them what they need to know to be successful. If I am happy at what I do it shows and the students want to be there to learn.

mentor and modeling

I try to explain the real act of life once thier out of school also to teach them to hold head up high and be proud of themself for all the knowledge they have aguired in the courses they have finshed.make them feel good about them selves.

Expectations

It's important to have interesting skills to keep the students attention. This also helps the retention.

Employees

It is important to have a series of different job skills in place at orientation, that way the students have questions that can be answered.

Getting started

As it is for all experiances, it is very important to be involved with tyhe orietation of the class or class's that being held.

What students want

Students want to have instructors to be there at every minute of the day for reinforcement of what is being taught.

Orientation

At our school, the Instructors have nothing to do with orientation. The entire orientation is conducted by department heads. Whether or not this is good has not, to my knowledge, ever been questioned, or discussed.
