Greg,
Excellent! Consistency, compliance, and consumer...a great combination.

Diego,
It's not just any particular age group anymore. People of all ages are getting involved in social media.

Cynthia ,
It is a fun medium to use, but it takes time and effort to keep it up.

My school uses it to keep our current students up to date with our activities. I personally like it.
My school uses it to express how our current student feel about us. i personally like it. I let's me keep in touch with my students once they are passed the admissions process.
We love to share the success of our student and share the great styles they create.
How much time do you spend maintaining this. I would like to see our institution use more of this? Our problem has been allocating the personnel to keep this going.
We use social media for many reasons. We have two facebook pages. They are tied together but one is the business page and one is more of a friend/fan page that we use to connect with current students and alumni. Facebook is great to show the public all of the great events and opportunities our academy is involved with. For example we had students recently give manicures to teachers for teacher appreciation day. We took pictures of this and posted it on our page. Even if there is a complaint or concern we can respond in an ethical truthful way for the public to see how we as an academy handle things.
Our institution utilizes Facebook as a tool for us to connect with our current student body, alumni and prospective students on upcoming events and activities. It gives everyone a feel for who we are as an institution and is a great way to show our culture. It helps us also internally see what things are happening at our other campuses. Social media and the technologies that may not have existed previously, have absolutely given us a better way to communicate with the public.
At the largest private university in the nation, we use a variety of different methods for promoting and advertising our school: social media like FB, Twitter, YouTube channel, LI and Flickr; national TV; Internet and search engine optimization; local & national radio, etc. We also provide an internal social network for students and alumni to connect with each other, faculty, staff, and others via the WWW.
Most social media communication direct from the University is centralized to ensure that all local campuses and the Online Campus are consistent in message, and always always operating in compliance with state and federal laws.
We use social media to stay current and relevant, trend online, get people talking about us, retain students, address concerns, inform the community about the school and/or relevant events, keep students and alumni engaged and to feel part of a community, and of course to build the brand overall. Social media is the prime driver and essentially the new "word-of-mouth" that people rely on for reference.
I run the facebook and twitter of my school i use it and i think its very effective for promoting our institution. Because were in a media world now and all our young applicants have grown up using myspace, facebook, twitter. so i think its easier for them to find us on there with information.
Monique,
It certainly brings you closer with your community at large as well as your institutional community. A great tool!

Shanna,
Educational institutions are discovering this medium to stay connected with those who use social media as a way of staying connected.

Jeremy,
We are just beginning to explore the frontier of social media. There is a value there in being able to reach many people through this medium.

I do not personally have use social media because I am a private person. However, the college uses social media to updates current and potential students.
My university participates heavily in Facebook through multiple pages that include a general fan page as well as an alumni page and degree specific pages. As both an employee and a student of my university I Have “liked†many of the pages offered. It seems as if the pages offer a genuine value by providing information that assists the student with additional important and fun information that university may have a difficult time sharing effectively through other outlets.
Let's take our facebook page for example. The benefit is that we've made it specific to our location. With us being such a large institution, with campuses all over the country with both local campus and online modalities it's important our community knows we have a local presence and what we respresent. We post all local events, including community service and graduations.
The university uses these social networking publications on topics of interest to our student community, reflection quotes, news, etc..
Social networking on the student, socialize and make students brainstorm, is great.
