Social media may have some negative connotation, However social media can be positive as it provides referrals to schools. Information posted on these social media are never removed permanently. Therefore schools must be careful as to what is posted on social media.
Our university uses facebook and instagram. We have a new campaign coming up that will use instagram, twitter and facebook to engage current and prospective students. What I do not want is to use my personal social media to promote the school un this new campaign.
Social Media is an area my school is looking into heavily and wants to become more involved with. One thing that was brought to my attention through this training is that I don't believe that we have a policy handbook for how to use Social Media and I will recommend that this get addressed. Another issue that I have personally with Social Media is my employers expectation for me to participate in it. I have my personal and private social media and frankly I don't want that connected to my professional employment. I would like to keep that aspect of my life separate from my job and I don't like the expectation that my job is placing on my to join my school's social media.
We have a facebook page dedicated to ongoing events at our University. We are in the process of creating pages to help assimilate new students.
It is indeed time consuming. It is a great way to stay in contact with graduated students. We use the social media to stay in contact in regards to employment. However, we do strive to keep our page current and up to date with any changes that need to be made.
Our school has a Facebook page, however I do not think that it is used as often as it should. I also feel that with students using social media more and more, it is important to use tools such as Facebook. I do wish that my school would allow more use of Facebook, especially when it comes to placement and reaching out to graduates.
Kimberly,
The benefits of social media are showing themselves in the quick connectivity reaching out without boundaries.

Dian,
It does take time and concerted effort to maintain and monitor social media sites.

Robert,
Social media excites and informs its users. There needs to be oversight and control of information to the public.

Heather,
You bring very good points to the forum. Social media brings the world to your doorstep, but how much of our personal world do we want to share? It's such a new frontier, it pays to be cautious.

Social media is a great way to engage with prospects and current students outside of the typical campus interactions. It also encourages a dialogue with students in an area that they feel comfortable to help provide us with valuable feedback.
I agree! We just started using social media this past year. It is a great way to get prospective, current students and alumni involved in happenings on campus. We have had a lot of interest with upcoming alumni events, with alumni sharing photos and other memories! It has worked out to be a great tool for engagement.
Our institution recently decided to incorporate social media for a variety of purposes including communicating with prospective students and as a tool to engage alumni. The biggest challenge was ensuring sufficient staffing levels to monitor and reply to posts in a timely manner.
Our school uses these sites to produce interest in the organization and promote referrals. I think this is a good way to communicate our product and increase attendance.
In the last couple years or less, our university began using social media in the form of Twitter and Facebook. We have official accounts that are controlled by a single department so it is cautiously used to avoid issues. I think it is great because it allows prospective and current students to access more information about events and campus happenings. It also makes me nervous on a personal level because, as a staff member, I do not want social media connections with my personal Facebook page. Therefore, I stay distant and do not "like" pages. I am not trusting of social media privacy regulations and functions.
Christopher,
It is awesome that you share their success stories. They have worked hard and you are sharing it with the world.

Adrianna,
Pictures are a great way to promote your school. We lover to see ourselves, people we know, or just tune in to see what is happening.

Keri,
It is a great medium to stay connected.

Allida,
It is very time consuming and people need to be well versed in the arena.
