Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

Empowering students

I think it is the instructors’ responsibility to empower his or her students through class activities. Instructors set the tone for the entire classroom. Students would be encouraged to learn in different ways. Also, instructors should add real life situations to the lecture. By during these things, students would be more engaged with the lecture and the material covered will stick with them.

Building Confidence In Yourself

If you are not confident in you ablilities to teach you can have a very difficult time in gaining the students respect and desire to learn from you. You would not be the teacher if you were not qualified. Understand that and you will be a successful teacher.

Managing Students

Just as there are different learning and teaching styles there are even more personalities to deal with. In order to reach all of the students you have to be able to adapt with these. This may seem like an undaunting and sometimes impossable task but it is not really that difficult. I love the challange of changing "hats" to meet the requirements of all my students.

Student Focus

In order to keep the students focused, the course can not be presented in a boring manner.A change of pace, a challenge, or student participation are just some of the ways this can be accompished. When some new and different information is presented the students will be anxious and focus on the topics coming to them.

Student Success

In order to have successful students you have to be a successful. instructor. To this you have be very versitile and be able to change teaching styles to accommodate a large variety of learning styles. It is not always easy but if you are aware of this fact it can be done and the rewards can not be measured by anything but pride!

Every Opportunity to Succeed

When I address a new class, and go over the expectations of the students, I make it perfectly clear that with effort and discipline my class is designed to give the student "every opportunity to succeed". This includes making myself readily available to students outside of the scheduled class, extra credit assignments and other grade boosting alternatives.

re writing curriculum can be stressfull

We are rewriting curriculum for a new couse which is stress full because we have a dead line to meet.We have found a quite place with no distactions seems to help.

Instructor anxiety

Having a feeling of anxiety is not always a bad thing for instructors. It pushes us to prepare to alleviate these feelings. If after preparation we still feel uneasy, than maybe we are just putting to much pressure on ourselves.

Challanging students

The best way to deal with challenging student is to interact closely with them. Sometimes they are just looking for attention and for someone to care about the. Of course one student should not take all of an instructors attention, but some need it more than others.

unfocused students

Unfocused students can disrupt the whole synergy of a class. This type of student may need different means to learn and stay focused. Just lecture will put anyone to sleep and make it seem as if they are lacking focus. Sometimes students have outside issues that keep them from concentrating as well.

Common Instructor Mistakes

As a new instructor, this section was very useful at quelling many of my first time jitters.

Dealing with Difficult Students

This was a very helpful section of the course. I truly believe that adult students are bit more challenging since they are at various stages in their lives.

Using a To Do List effectively

I've tried handwritten lists, planners, Outlook and Google Calendars and Tasks. My problem is that after I make a list, I have trouble keeping it in front of me. My duties take me from home to office to seminars and conferences to the classroom. Somehow, I manage to find myself away from my task list, sometimes for the better part of the day. When I finally refer back to it, it's too late, and important tasks have been forgotten. Does anyone else have this problem? Seems like it may be a discipline issue, or simply an adversion to structure. I've always been a "go with the flow" kind of person.

Is Everything Important?

Is e verything equally important. Not unless, we believe it is so. This perception overwhelmes me. The section on prioritizing the to do list has been useful to me. I can see on paper what is my first priority. I don't necessarily have to try to do everthing at once. Storing everthing in my mind works haphazardly. I hope to be able to keep this to do list on an on-going basis in the future.

New Teacher Mistakes

If I dont know a answer to a question, I would tell the student I will find the answer and get back to them. We are here to teach, as well as continue our education as instructors. I feel that is showing I am human and can learn every day also.

causes of stress at work

How do you cope with the stress caused by a student who is always eating, even though I have asked him not to? He can not be trusted and is always lying about things that I have caught him doing.
