I feel as though when an instructor has properly planned there classes and provided a syllabus in which they follow it allows the students to have more direction. I also believe it makes the students feel organized in there learning and alleviates an undue stress.

Hi Katrina,
You are right! It is our responsibility to ensure the classroom environment is conducive for learning.
Patricia

Hi Geraldine,
Absolutely! We have a lot on us to educate our students. It is soley our job to prepare them for their career.
Patricia

Class management is a critical part of educational planning because it keeps the class professional and shows the class that you the instructor has management skills and these skills are essential to their progress and career goals.

Hi
This is Geraldine and thank you for allowing me to reply.
I think class management is a critical part of educational planning in that students come to clas with high expectation and a great deal of excitement, and if we are not careful in educational plannning, such as classroom participation and student involvement, it is so easy to get off course. Students have prepared their schedules and arrangement have been made and they are ready to learn. The student success is our ultimate goal.
thanks

Hi Gregory,
I concur! Tell them exactly like it is and what it needs to be on Day 1. Do not hold rules, policies, and procedures until a later time, this will cause way too many problems.
Patricia

Hi Heather,
Students will definitely control the classroom, if you don't. Students need to know who has the control...the instructor.
Patricia

If an instructor doesn't manage the class on all levels, the students take control and the instructor loses control. This creates an environment in which the instructor does not have the respect of the students, and the classroom can become a free for all.

I agree, Marc, and on the first day of class, I lay down the law. By spending (investing) five to ten minutes telling every new group of students the rules of my classroom, I save an enormous amount of time down the line, not to mention, having fewer headaches later. Teachers who neglect to list their rules almost always have class management problems.

Hi Jeremy,
Students deserve to learn in an environment that is fully controlled by the instructor.
Patricia

if you can't control the class the transfer of information is not possible.

Hi Marc,
I concur! Students want and need an environment that is conducive for learning. It is our job to make sure the environment is where effective learning can take place.
Patricia

Class management is a must. As in all societies and institutions there needs to be rules and regulations. Professional behavior must start in the classroom . This will enable the student to acclimate in their future work places.

Students prefer an organised , safe well managed enviornment.

Hi Scott,
We owe it to our students to create an atmosphere that is conducive for learning.
Patricia

It sets up sucess and a smooth classroom experience for all.

I teach criminal justice classes and there is a lot of opporunity to do activities that match the subject. I've done mock crime scenes, had the students enter the classroom and draw a sketch. I've also had an unkown student come into the classroom, ask where I am and then take my keys to demonstrate eye witness testimony. I've done mock trials and everybody is give a role, or had them practive interviewing each other. Variety definately keeps the class alert, fun, and creates a great learning experience.

Hi Nancy,
I like the variation you are willing to use to keep your students engaged. I can tell you manage your time well and your classroom. It also appears that you are vey organized and prepared. Your students are fortunate to have you as an instructor.
Patricia

Organization is the key to class management. If you are organized you will seem more competent, have more time for the class assignments, lesson plan and students' questions. Class management is vital to creating a good academic atmosphere. If this key component is missing, then students will not benefit from a fertile learning enivronment.

The class also needs to see that the course is well managed in time, assuring the students that the instructor will teach all of the material. Management also encompasses behavior managment, from those angry students to the verbal comic ones down to the silent students who abosorb, but do not want spotlight engagement.

Varied activities are also vital, as the time allotments, broken up into varied formats, engage the students, and assist the educational reinforcment. The insired pedagogical approaches can enrich the student experience, but with the managment skills listed above and below:

Therefore, the key ingredients to a successful academic creation are:

. Organization
. Time management
. Behavior management
. Varied activities
. Multi media (timed, for effectiveness)

(Individual, group, role playing, presentations by students, and multi-media instruction will enhance the academic interest and, of course, the learning experience.

Hi Michael,
Students need and want structure. Instructors truly have a better sense as to how the class will run whenever structure is involved. When things are allowed to go unstructured no telling what will happen or won't happen.
Patricia

The manner in which you are able to manage your class will determine the scope and structure of each class. The effective and motivational instructor with excellent class management skills will be able to pre-determine the length of each class's unit, and can plan an effective classroom strategy by knowing how the class will flow and how to refer to previous learning to support new concepts.
