Hi Marshall,
Plans are not etched in stone, sometimes you have to alter them accordingly. When the plan does not work don't let it cause you to sweat, simply make a smooth transition as to not to alarm the students.
Patricia
With class amangement you can set the tone, get the class all on one page. Being prepared is one of the biggest things for class management. This also sets the know that you know what you are talking about and you are an expert in your feild.
The key here is a well managed class room will have successful student and Professors.

I liked the ideas presented in this section. I do have one question about the idea of guided notes. There has been discussion among our faculty about what is too much. Where do you spoon feed and where do you provide guidance that still allows for thoughtful thinking on the student's part?
Classroom management encompasses everything from preparedness to knowing a students name. All and everything inbetween show students that you care about them and want to provide the best learning environment possible. By keeping things professional and on track, you are creating a positive, comfortable atmosphere where students can relax and learn.
At times the best made plans encounter an event that requires a switch to plan "B". Solid class room management allows for a seamless shift from one plan to another regarding differences in students on several different levels.
As instructors we must be mindful of the fact that we serve the entire class and that not everyone learns the same. We have to adjust and we have to be flexible. Allowing disruptions or distractions can directly take away from another students learning experience and that is not acceptable.
They really thrive in a more constructed class room enviroment. If things are not managed properly they get up set and do not do as well.
Anytime a group, team, squad, dept. is trying to accomplish their goal(s), there must be structure in place to direct/guide the individuals toward goal-achievement. In our case, it is the instructor.
Class management is an important aspect of learning because everyone, every student has some basic needs to excel. Physical comfort is one aspect. No one is fully open to learning if they are in a 90 degree classroom, for example. They are a wee bit pre-occupied...
No one is prone to learn if they feel there are favorites being played in a class; these students will close down because of resentment. It is imperative that an Instructor treat every student equally, give each participant a fair chance. You may have a favorite student or two, this is natural, but this preference must not be revealed, must not manifest itself to other students. And believe me--several years of personal experiences/failures here--students WILL pick up on favoritism being expressed, however, subtly and "tactfully." Be respectful to everyone.
Class Management (time management) helps with the flow of information and is two fold; as you expect the students to be on time, ready review over the previous outside classroom assignment & ready for instruction. Your students expect the same out of you on time, ready to answer questions that have arisen from the out of classroom assignments, and ready to instruct.
Hi Richard,
Returning papers and assignments should really be important to every student. Student should want to know how they are doing, and they should be very serious about their education.
Patricia
Returning papers and assignments timely is more important to the dedicated student. If you lose them, you are in danger of losing the whole class.
Class management planning is extremely important because the instructor has to be able to cover the required content within an alloted amount of time. If not, some students might feel short changed if the instructor gets behind and begin to lose motivation. In addition an instructor that habitually gets behind in covering course material will cause learning gaps, could lose student interest, and create stress for students making them having to "cram."
Class management is critical for student success because: it enables students to focus on and engage in the course material without distraction, it creates a safe environment for students to express and discuss ideas, it resolves issues before the ballon out of control, it help establish that you are a professional in your career field.
Hi Carlos,
It is the instructor's responsibility to manage the classroom. The instructor should ensure that the environment in the classroom is conducive for learning.
Patricia
Many times students will try to challenge for the sake of strenghening there own agenda. Many times they are pursuing a modification in test results. Courtesy & respect must work both ways for the advantage of both groups. An environment of appropriate mutual respect earns points in the learning category.
Hi Brandon,
You're right! The instructor must ensure an environment that is conducive for learning.
Patricia
Hi Mary Ellen,
We are most of our students role model. We must lead by example.
Patricia
Well said. Without classroom management, control of a classroom is quickly lost as some students will attempt to challenge you. In other instances, students will attempt to pull you off topic as to redirect the colloquium. Either of these are detrimental to the learning of other students.
I agree, but not only are you meeting their needs but you are also teaching them to be accountable. You are also teaching them soft skills which might be foreign to some students.By being a role model for class management you are preparing them for a future role they may find themselves in.
