student frustration at the entry level

Seems students just want to get the learning part over with so they can get into the field. They need a little more patience, but they don't see it.

Excitement about the subject matter

I feel that using personal stories about past experiences promotes excitement and interest in learning more on the part of the student. It also triggers enthusiasm in the instructor to make his/her lectures more fun for the students.

Humanizing

I have found that showing your students that you are "HUMAN" by sharing a personal "FUNNY" is a good way to keep them on track and awake. Eg. "Please don't sleep in this class! It tells me that you think I am boring! I already know I am boring, my wife told me so. I don't need you people backing that thought up! This always gets a laugh and keeps them awake.

New Beginnings

Regardless of age, gender or experience level, UTI is a new beginning for each and every student. It is very important that, as instructors, we get them off to a great start in their new chosen profession.

Multiple ages, backgrounds and experience levels.

It poses an interesting challenge for the instructor when the class has multiple or a wide range of ages, backgrounds and experience levels. Making sure that the novice is taught while keeping the more experienced students interested.

Motivation

Motivation comes in many forms, but the students have to be them selves motivated to bethere not just stuck there but family or relatives.

Student Focus

with all that is happening to them it is hard for them to focus on their education and career paths.

student frustration

We have to be on the lookout for signs of student frustration, because each student is different this may be more apparent in some students than others.

Motivating your students

Step back and think about the lesson you just gave! Was it something that would have motivated you? If not why!! If you wouldn't want to come back what makes you think the students would feel any different. Also remember they probably know very little about the subject. Did you overwhelm them or make them feel stupid? If you did you probably won't see those student again. Keep them motivated so they WANT to come back.

Don't forget why you have the job.

I've seen to many instructors forget why they are where they are. To many get in an ego trip. They want to show the students just how smart they are compared to the students. Just remember with out the students you wouldn't have a job.

Focus

Reminding students to look back, and see how much knowledge they have gained so far, will help them re-focus on their goals....

Shy Students - Recognition

There are some students who are so shy that they won't raise their hand to answer a question even if they know the correct answer. I never call on a student and "put them on the spot" if I think they don't know the right answer but you can often tell from a student's body language, the eye contact and maybe slight smile on their face, that they do know the answer. If I'm convinced that a shy student does know the correct answer to a question, I like to call on them so that they have that moment of "mini-success" and recognition. Sometimes their fellow students recognize the accomplishment with a nice comment or maybe even a round of applause. This might be a little bit embarrassing for the shy student but I think it makes feel like they are now really part of the group.

Frustration from the beginning

Students are frustrated when they are told one thing at the admissions department and find out they are not told the truth. Or, they bend the truth to sign them up.

motivation

motivation is strictly the students desire to learn . Are they there because they want to be or are do they still don't know what they want to do

focus

focus is tough when the material drags and is not very interesting

retention

retention is different for all students we all don't have the same memory abilities

student frustration

frustration can be difficult if the student can't feel comfortable asking for help

Anatomy of a Vision Statement

As career school managers or department heads, we may have written vision statements for our teams, but if you were to write a personal vision statement what would you include in it and why?

Recognition

Recognizing the students for their accomplisments, will give them a feeling of acceptance..

Frustration

Frustrated Students, can create loss of control of your class, which can result in a large gripe session..
