Do any of you here have any students with learning disabilities? If so how do you handle it?

Employ Case-by- Case Consideration

I like this approach which reasonable modifications must be made, so they are not discriminatory. Knowing that we have the ability to modify a particular policy, procedure, or practice in order to provide access is awesome. However we still need to be careful and consider all the ramifications and procedures when making a decision.

Maintaining the Fine Line of "Professionalsim"

How do you keep your students interacted without seeming like a "heartless robot"? Typically the harder teachers give the most valuable lessons, however some of those teachers have the bigger "drop" in their classes. So in turn what do you do to keep a relationship with your student without going easy on them so everyone can get that A?

Module 4

The portion of the admissions representative's job in guiding a student with a disability was very helpful. It is important that admissions personnel understand their responsibilities as related to prospective students with a disability in order to avoid legal implications for themselves and the school.

Distinction between ADA and Section 504

I understand the distinction between the two federal laws; however, I am curious as to why section 504 is still needed if all higher education institutions are covered under Titles II and III of the ADA?

Avoiding Stereotypes

Being appropriate and PC at all times at work is something that is written in policy, but it sometimes the hardest thing to adhere to. I am glad that in the field of education there are more policies in place to prevent these types of conversations from taking place.

Clarity of Accomodations

I am glad that this module went over the differences between what is an accommodation and what is not considered one. I wondered when I was taking classes myself if some students got preferred or favored treatment for having a disability and it is good to see that its to help them be on the same page as everyone else.

Having an Impact

After reading this module it is interesting to see just how many things go into play when it comes to accommodating students with disabilities. It's not just in the classroom that they are having issues, it is at home trying to study and trying to take the examinations. It was a real mind opener!

Equality for All

Having worked in the past with special needs individuals in a school setting, it is nice to see all the efforts that the government has put in place to help them grow and develop how they see fit, not how society see's fit. We still have a lot of growth to do ourselves as far as acceptance and equality, but this was a refreshing read.

Dyslexia and A&P

I have encountered students with Dyslexia having a really hard time passing an Anatomy and Physiology course since it requires learning all parts of the body and knowing how to spell them. What reasonable accommodations students with Dyslexia could receive in order to be successful?

Best way to assist students

I have encountered students that have disclosed their disabilities with admissions but refuse to provide documentation to receive the neccesary accomodations. What would be the best suggestion to encourage students to do so? Is it appropiate to push/ encourage students to do so?

Formal Request Documents

Is there a specific formal document that must be used when a request is given to a school or is medical documentation good enough to use as a request?

This information was not new to me having worked in HRM however it was a very useful review for student side vs employees.

The Impact of Disability

Throughout my K-12 education, I had many learning difficulties, such as reading, spelling and comprehension. In middle school, my school system placed me into basic reading and English courses due to this problem. Later, I realized I was struggling with the English language, and decided to take a Latin course to correct my confusion. It was not until my 10th grade year attending my first year in Latin that my faculty member realized I was dyslexic. In our reading labs, we had to read out loud in Latin using a headset, and she would listen to see how well we read. She followed my reading and she discovered I was reading backwards and reversing words. She privately took me a side, and explained what my reading and comprehension issues were at the time, and empowered me with tools to help correct the issue. My 11th grade year, I was placed in an advanced English course. Later as I continued my post-secondary education, I found if I read from a computer screen versus a paper book, I was able to read 60% faster. What I discovered was how the words were displayed to my eyes. Computer screens are backlit devices that allowed me to process the information faster (and more accurately) versus reading a paper book lit from the front by lamps. The Texas Education System actually perform some research, and found that dyslexic students function better using tablets (iPad, so on) when reading, and they have started a small program to help these students. Learning disabilities are quite real, and I was fortunate to have a faculty member discover mine, and empower me with tools, so I could move forward successfully.

I think its important it make it clear to the student how to get help they need. They shouldn't feel bad about themselves for needing help.

What is my role

As an instructor I believe my greatest role is not administrative in nature. It is to help inspire my students to learn and grow. The text is absolutely correct that as instructors our responsibility is to treat our students with disabilities as student first and that “they come to college for the same reasons everyone else does”. I look forward to applying all that I have learned in this course as an instructor.

Universal Design

Are there standards or requirements for UD desks or chair in the classroom? If so, who regulates these standards?

Faculty background and qualifications

I learned faculty are required to have at least a Masters degree, does that mean the faculty need the Master degree to teach the submect content? I do understand the need for a background check and faculty should have background check before being hired.
