class management set the stage for what the rest of the course will look like. The instuctor must ensure the right culture is establish that will ensure sucessful learning.
In order to manage the class well, the instructor must be in control. Policies and regulations should be clearly stated in the syllabus. The instructor should take the time to explain the course requirements to the students in the first day of class. I usually break the class into several small groups. I introduce myself to the class and tell the students about my background and experience. After that, the students in each group will introduce themselves. I ask the students to tell us something about themselves. I try to get to know all my students but I also want my students to know one another. It can decrease student anxiety in my course. Creating a friendly environment is conductive to learning. The instructor should establish a positive classroom climate from the very beginning of the course term.
Hi Niel,
I concur! I have known instructors that were very weak when it came to managing a class. They allowed the students to control the classroom. Giving students control over the classroom is never a good thing. Instructors need to make sure to create an environment that is conducive for learning.

Hi Robert,
Great point of indicating who is included in the class management process. We must manage ourselves professionally so that students have someone to look up to.

In my experience, all students are looking for structure and guidance to lead them towards success. Without any structure students become uninterested in the course and become attendance issues.
Class management to me is managing myself, the students and the content. All three need to be given equal attention in order for any of my classes to have successful outcomes, defined as the necessary knowledge having been passed on and understood by the class as a whole.
Hi Jennifer,
The instructor better control the classroom at all times, otherwise students will take things in their hands and all kind of chaos will begin...not good.
Patricia
I believe class management is a critical part of educational planning because it sets boundaries guidelines and organization. It assists with providing a structure for your students.
Students become easily distracted and unmotivated in the instructor cannot manage the classroom. Distracted students tend not to complete assignments or answer questions during the class.
Hi Albert,
Excellent points made! If you allow your students to control the classroom, they will. It is the instructor's responsibility to produce an environment that is conducive for learning.
Patricia
Class room management is important due to the fact that it establishs standards and guidelines for all to follow. Example is if the instructor is not organized it maybe seen by the student as "do I really want to learn from him?" Where is the beginning, middle and end of the story. Jumping from idea to idea creats confusion in the minds of the students. Also if some members of the class are disrupted this will be a learning hinderance for other in the class. If the instructor permits it, student will continue to do it.
In most all my classes...I have the work plan
in writing to be distributed....it comes down
to: you know exactly what you need to do...it's
your issue not getting it done." I follow same
procedures in both lecture and computer lab
courses.
If class management is poor the students will control the learning environment. The teacher is no longer a leader but a babysitter.
Ineffective classroom mangement results in an environment not conducive to learning for all students.
Hi Marlene,
The instructor must ensure an environment that is conducive for learning.

Hi Terry,
Classroom management is important. Students like for the instructor to control the classroom so that effective learning can take place.
Patricia
I look at proper class management as the final piece of good teaching. Assuming the instructor is sound in knowlege and content, what is left is the recognition of how to work with the students collectively and indiviudally. This is achieved thru proper recognition of problem areas in ones' classroom, working thru them, and achieving course goals and objectives.
everyones attention is important so that class atmosphere is peaceful and concentrate listening on the lecturer.
The students must know what to expect, as well as knowing who is leading the class. I personally manage the classroom as I would my department. I also believe it is utterly important for the Instructor to know her students, which assists in their learning process.
Hi Toni,
It is certainly the instructor's role to control the classroom. Students should have an environment where effective learning can take place.

Hi Edith,
Our students certainly have a lot to juggle in life. If we can make things cut and dry for our students to help them better manage all that they have going on, it makes life more manageable for them.
