differentiation

teaching in different ways helps tap into different learning styles that students have

Perfectionist procrastination

I find that most of my procrastination comes from being a perfectionist. It is hard to think of starting a big project without having sufficient time to finish it in whole. Breaking the large project up into smaller "projects" seems to help. So rather than saying "this next three weeks I have to completely redesign the lab", it helps to say "tomorrow I have to get three of the new trainers into the lab and operating properly". It is a subtle trick that seems to help fool me into thinking I got everything done. Although it does not always work, I sometimes do not fall for my trick... :)

Sense of humor

Important point about being able to have a sense of humor when one makes a mistake and is called on it and also taking this opportunity to express the correction which can be an encouraging step for the students.

Mistakes

What is the best thing to do when you are not sure of an answer? I get anxiety when this happens and I need some advise on handling the situation. Tiffany

Don't STRESS OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Working over 55 hours per week adds a tremendous amount of stress in my life. To deal with this load of work, I exercise regular and eat a good healthy diet. It helps me in this area of life...having good friends makes a difference too.

Too many things at once causes stress....

Stress is the great killer at work. Try to work responsibly.

More time helps...

Managing your time helps a lot. Try to keep a good perspective about it. Use a scheduler.

Stress is bad

Too much stress can be bad for you. Try to balance your life. Don't take it personnal.

Task completion

I beleive in grading my papers as they are handed in and I assign due dates so they don't pile up and I can keep up with the work load.

time management

I agree with making a to do list. I find that when I make lists and cross off completed tasks that I feel a lot more productive with what I do with my time. I also notice more things getting done an alot less left unfinished.

Guest Speakers

I like the idea of guest speakers, you do have any ideas for a customer service class?

Getting Started

I am finishing up my first term teaching and I must stay, I had a great time! I feel the hardest part was getting started. I advise new teachers to go into the classwork with confidence and with intentions to bond with the students. Making that bond is critical in a small classroom and the students will appriecate you more. My only concern with my teaching method is that I didn't set strong guidelines from the beginning. I will not do that next term! Make sure that students know that they can not walk all over you!

Instructor mistakes

We should never discuss our personal problems. This takes time away from the class

reducing cheating

One way I reduce or have no cheating in my class is to walk around while they are testing.

managing students

One technique I use when i have an unmanaged student or talking student is to continue lecturing while walking to stand beside them causing them to quite talking

beginning of term

This is when I use all of my stategies and for the duaration of the term

to stress or not to stress

to eliminate stress around you you must first eliminate stress from within. stress can cloud the mind and make it hard to think clearly and act rationaly.under stress you're producing many different chimicals opsetting the proper funtioning of the brain. understanding the process allows you to manage and filter your thoughts in order to analyse and rectify any possible outcome at the source of the problem.. the question is how well do we understand that process.

use of cell phone/texting in class

My policy is no cell phone use in class except for emergencies. How can an instructor deal with student that disregard the policy and consistently texting.

answering student questions

I find that if I don't know an answer to a student's question, I always say I will research and get back to you next class with the answer.

abusive students

Because I teach in an urban setting, often times these students are argumentative like they are out in the streets. My solution is to have them remain after class and discuss their behavior and disatifactions in an adult manner where other students cannot hear.
