Pre-testing

when it comes to testing on the surgical instruments for ST program, I always have an open lab and student on student tutoring before test days. This helps my students perform better when it's test day.

power point

how do you add power point to lab classes! I feel like I don't have enough time to add this to my classes.

field trips

I take all my core classes on a filed trip to our local hospitals so they can see for them selves exactly what field they are in and make sure this is the career right for them.

Late assignments

Students need to be responsible for the actions. They should be able to make up the test or assignments, but late points should be added to assignments, and a revised test given when they return.

Anticipating problems

Students and Instructors need to have several opinions for their teaching objectives. Students all learn in a different way. Problems and issues arise all the time. An Instructor has to be fexible while still teaching what is required for the class. Daily objectives are subject to change.

PP Presentations

PP Presentations are to help an Instructor present the material. The PPPresentation is not the main teaching format.

Quest speakers

Quest speakers are an added bonus to the class. The students can hear real life stories about their career opportunities

Short topics

In my accounting class students like to learn one thing and then get it down so that we can build on it in the future.

Power Point

My students really appreciate the Power Point presentations! They seem to get a better understanding of the chapter that way.

Field Trips

I think that field trips are an excellent way to get students involved. It lets them see the "real world" and how things are outside of the classroom.

Extra Credit

Personally, I have always utilized extra credit as both a reward for students doing well and for those that are legitimately trying, but still falling short. The motivation this provides those students is excellent and typically the students take full advantage of the opportunity.

Pretesting Learners

I am in favor of pretesting learners for one primary purpose. I have heard too many times that learners get frustrated because they are not ready for a particular course and subsequently, the learners merely figure that the college is attempting to get more money out of them. What are your thoughts on this?

PowerPoint Pitfalls

I attended a training conference with an excellent PowerPoint Presentation. However, the problem is that presentation lasted over 90 minutes and consisted of over 50 slides. It was more like a motion picture than a PPT presentation. All of the attendees were totally overwhelmed by the end, including myself.

Guest Speaker Pitfalls

I have had some wonderful experiences with guest speakers over the years. However, I had one experience where the guest speaker decided to totally deviate from the topic and actually created extra work for me later by trying to explain some of the issues and topics he brought up that really was not in line with what the textbook and ethical principles went by. I still use guest speakers, but I am always a little nervous.

Best of the bunch!

What has been your most successful delivery method in instruction and why?

Class Preparation

How much time do you all average to prepare for a two and four hour block class.

using field trips as a way to introduce career

by having students go on a field trip to experience what the course is about with help greatly in knowledge and understanding of topics

alternative exams

This method works quite well in one of my courses where there is a frequent need for outside of class testing.

pretesting students

I really like the idea of pre-testing the students' knowledge bases. This had not occurred to me before and in hindsight it would've been quite helpful when my students did become lost.

powerpoints

I completed a Microsoft Office course offered by our school last quarter. I gained a great deal of powerpoint skill from it. Of course I'll be a work in progress, but I would recommend add'l powerpoint-specific training to anyone as you can get alot out of it.
