I would love to have an ice breaker for my first day of my class. At the present time I teach Tooth Morphology. I loved the idea about doing the minute paper, any more suggestions?

Learning Styles

Most students fail because some instructors fail to recognise that students have different learning styles. I have a nagging question about how to handle a situation where a student is listening to music (Ipod) while attending lecture. Is that an acceptable learning style?

Showing Up Early

This is a tactic that the director of my department has already suggested. After struggling with the idea of waking up another half hour early, I am going to start applying this strategy. I have been noticing that it takes me some time to get the class "up and running". Maybe if I was there early I could better set the stage and we could hit the ground running when the class starts.

Getting students involve in active learning.

As and instructor during my lecture and my activities, when i come across a student that is quite and like to stay to him/her self i will do group activitis to get that student involved and to also express how important it is to work with others because in the work force he or she is requiered to work with and talk to others.

Ensuring that students are following you

I think that it is important to ask questions relevent to the content you are teaching at different intervals throughout your lecture. Watching the facial expressions of your students will allow you to pinpoint who you may need to ask questions to. This will ensure understanding of the material.

Remembering our students are individuals also

As our students enter into our rooms for the first time they are only names and numbers. It is our job as the instructor to get to know theie learning needs as individuals. Asking them appropriate questions about their educational needs is a great way to start. This information can assist you in creating an appropriate learing environment for the entire class.

retention

what is the best way if you tech on block courses to cover past material, without reteaching subjects

learning environment

i have found that mixing theory and hands on activities together allows for the best learning environment.I have found it keeps the students interested and allow the instructor to help the students during the learning process

music

I agree that music can be soothing and uplifting

group discussion

what is the best approach for group discussion in the classroom, without having only a small percentage contribute?

Preporation

What are some strategies that are used commonly for preporations to teach a college level class for the first time?

Teaching OT

I teach keyboarding and typing also intro to microsoft word 2007.This is not a very interesting topic and can become boring quickly. Any one have any suggestions on activities that make class more upbeat?

Getting to know you activities

I am looking for sugguestion on first day activities for college students in order to make them comfortable working with eachother in groups. Are there any suggestions that anyone may have?

Being a great role model!

Be aware of how you present yourself especially the first day because the students are closely observing you. They expect professionalism, honesty, and empathy with a cherry on top:) The students deserve all of this also. Alot of my students have started our program with many changes made in their personal lives. They deserve the best education possible.

No response to "Are there any questions?"

How do you suggest we go about soliciting questions when we get no response to "Are there any questions?"

Meeting the Class for the First Time

When meeting my class for the first time, I feel it is very important that I share with with my students my professional experience outside of the 'teaching world'. This helps convey that I am an expert within my field. I also encourage my students to tell me about themselves - what they are hoping to get out of the class and what the aspire to do after obtaining their education.

After lecture review

I have found that if student do a quick review after the lecture they retain about twice as much.
